Starfleet Academy was founded in 2161 in the wake of the founding of the United Federation of Planets. The purpose of the Starfleet Academy is to ensure that Starfleet gets the necessary new officers to continue its mission "to boldly go where noone has gone before",

The medical branch of the Starfleet Academy is a special part of the academy, because the academic education of the future medical officers lasts 8 years in contrary to the normal 4 year-curriculum.
